Winter has arrived 2026

Its the start of a new year, and on the fourth day of 2026 winter has arrived, announced by a heavy covering of snow.

The brave are out in Eryri, venturing through the magical mountains in the snow and ice in search of the perfect winter scene. There used to be a time where I would have also braved the snow in search of that perfect snow shot, but Ive not been so committed to my photography of late, its a phase I go through at least once a year, so the thought of trecking was the last thing on my mind.

However, a photograph in the snow, especially in black and white is too good to be missed. I ventured out to the main street and the snow was without blemish, my eye was attracted to the most mundane of subjects, a drainguard that most would walk buy and ignore.

Its no masterpiece, its wedded to the thirds composition rule, negative space and horizontals. Despite this I hope it comes over as a purposeful image. True it would probably work better in a series of similar pictures, but sometimes you just need to think, take a picture from the most subject challenged viewpoint to help get out of a rut and re-ignite the part of the brain that helps take pictures.
